Why are tagines so expensive on Amazon?
For the uninitiated, a tagine is a Moroccan clay pot with a conical lid. It was first used by the Berbers of Northern Africa and keeps all your flavors in and your meats moist as it cooks slowly but surely a delectable meal of your dreams.
All caught up? Great.
Back to my point, why are tagines so expensive on Amazon (amazon.com to be specific, not .co.uk or .fr)? I know on good authority that tagines in Morocco cost as little as $5. A similar clay pot on Amazon will cost you — drumroll please — almost $60.
I am making it my mission to find out. Multiple reasons could have caused this incredible disparity in price: tariffs, shipping costs, consumer ignorance, and thus, price insensitivity to trendy, non-toxic, natural, earthy clay pots.
I know cooking with tagines makes life worth living, but — COME ON — why should anyone pay $60 for a lump of shaped clay when you can get it for $34 (shipping included) on SurLaTable.com.
I know buying a tagine on Amazon costs less than flying to Morocco and getting it there for $5 — but still.
No thank you, Amazon. I’ll see you next time when I need to buy a heat diffuser so that my tagine doesn’t break under the intense heat of my gas stove.
Peace.
