The coldest city you’ve never heard of

I know that you would rather listen to stories about sunny beaches in the Bahamas. Still, I will try to lift your spirits by telling you the story of my visit to the coldest place I have ever been to, Tromsø in Norway.

I went to the Paris of the Arctic in December 2017–the darkest time of year. I wanted to take photographs of this beautiful area. I had seen it in summer, and now I wanted to see it in winter. Since there are only 4 hours of daylight, my photography suffered a bit, but luckily, the streets are pretty well lit at night–which is almost all the time. The ice covering parts of the roads and sidewalks also helps reflect the light.

Small tip: Get metal spikes for your shoes, or your butt will meet the ice.

Tromso Harbor

The midnight sun and mild temperatures characterize the summers in Tromso. In winter, you don’t see the sun at all, only glimpses of it over the horizon. Furthermore, it gets freezing. The sky only becomes brighter during the day, like a night light. Not bright enough to wake you up, but enough to let you see in the dark if you can’t fall asleep.
