It’s been a while

As a copywriter, I write for a living. Dream job, right? Yes and no.

I think every copywriter wishes they could write for themselves. Sometimes…actually most of the time, we’re writing for someone else, in someone else’s voice. That’s where the interesting challenge of my job lies: those micro and macro problems that need to be solved. How does this read? Will people get it? Does this connect the dots in a meaningful way? How does this sound? Does it roll off the tongue?

As interesting as those challenges may be, it can be soulsucking. Every (copy)writer wants a certain amount of space for self-expression. Writing a jingle for Cinnamon Toast Crunch is fun but it’s not the catharsis that I think most people who enjoy writing are generally looking for—whether they write professionally or for personal pleasure.

Craft will always be there to shake up my grey cells, whether I’m creating a social post or writing a personal blog.

What’s your point? I hear you asking. Well, my job has kept me from writing here on Medium for too long. Recent events have made it abundantly clear that I need to seize the day before it’s too late and act on my writer’s gut (which has gotten more ample as I have languished in my office chair) so that I can write more of what I want to write. And hopefully, do that full-time. By that, I mean that nothing happens unless I make it happen.

So I will start writing on Medium. More and more. Please keep me honest and give me a nudge if I don’t post anything on here.
