The Youtuber I never knew I needed
It’s been a long time since a Youtube channel has garnered my undivided attention—probably not since Casey Neistat’s daily vlog. But recently, I learned of the existence of a Youtuber that might be the total opposite of the exciting hustle-and-bustle that Neistat made popular almost a decade ago (and it’s not Van).
During Thanksigivng with my New England relatives—between the turkey and pumpkin pie—my uncle was telling me about a Norwegian Youtuber who was sailing across the Arctic. As a fan of this frozen region, I was instantly interested.
Having overheard our conversation, my aunt immediately interjected that the man had a “very boring voice.” I instantly suspected that this YouTuber might actually be Finnish, not Norwegian. Finnish is a flat sounding lounging with little to no inflections or emphasis on specific syllables. After watching his intro, I knew I was right.
And now, I can’t watch anything else. Juho — the sailor and skier behind the “Alluring Arctic Sailing” YouTube channel — is the opposite of what any advertising agency would recommend their clients as an influencer, and that’s a good thing. Safe to say that he would never be seen frozen stiff on a Mister Beast video.
Alluring Arctic offers stunning footage of Nordic vistas, friendly belugas, gargantuan humpback whales, anything you can image and more that the Arctic circle has to show. Juho is usually accompanied on his journeys by his girlfriend, Sohvi, and occasionally their friends. (note: I think I got all the names right, but please feel free to correct me)
It’s an extraordinary look at a beautiful but dangerous region of the world where you have only yourself to depend on (usually). The channel also offers tips and tricks about sailing and exploring through Juho’s experiences. Everything feels organic. It feels like real life, because it is.
Juho is a seemingly humble guy who is passionate about skiing and sailing to remote places to ski some more. If you’re looking for some kind of mental escape from the sensory — as Mr. Rogers might call — “bombardment” that we experience every day on the internet, give “Alluring Arctic Sailing” a chance.
